Floor Pillows for Seating and Decorating
76Floor Pillows
Floor pillows are a versatile item that every household can use. If your idea of floor pillows is limited to beanbag chairs and musty pillows strewn around a smoky basement; you really should take another look.
Floor pillows come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes; with styles to please everyone from children and teens to adults. They can fit in with any décor, are suitable for many different rooms, and are useful in any number of situations.
Large Floor Pillows
You will find so many uses for large floor pillows you’ll wonder how you ever got along without them. From meditation to sitting around the coffee table playing cards; large floor pillows just make sitting on the floor more comfortable, and all your activities more enjoyable.
Kids love them!
Why sit on the rug in front of that roaring fire when you can snuggle up on a big, comfy floor pillow? When your family keeps growing, but there’s no room for more furniture, large pillows make great floor chairs. For those large gatherings of family and friends when there’s not enough seating, don’t you want those who end up on the floor to be comfortable (even if it is just the kids?)
In my opinion, floor pillows are essential when playing with little kids. When you hang around with children, you begin to notice how much time they spend on the floor. And also, how much time they want you to spend on the floor with them! For the sake of my knees, the more pillows the better!
And it’s always nice to have a floor cushion pillow to sit on for tea parties. There’s also the safety issue. Little kids aren’t all that coordinated; and even less so when they’ve been running around, bouncing off the sofa or spinning around in circles. That’s when it’s great to have a beanbag for the kid to fall on. And when the child begs for you to swing them around until your arms are about to fall off, a beanbag floor chair makes for a perfect emergency landing.
Oversized Floor Pillows
An oversized floor pillow is perfect for when you want to lay on the floor. You can get giant 6’ X 4’ overstuffed pillows for lounging, reading, sleeping, or just hanging out. Of course the classic beanbag chair is still available.
A foldable pillow, one pillow with three square cushions, is a great option. Lay it out flat if you want to lie on your stomach; then if you want to sit for a while, lay one cushion down on the floor, and fold the other two cushions into a back rest. These are all great choices for the media room, basement or dorm room.
You can also find oversized floor pillows that look like furniture. There are full-length cushions with back and arm rests. You can find thick, box-like sectional cushions to arrange like sofas and chairs. There are large cushions with hinges for an adjustable back rest or laying flat.
These are great for teens or even young people just starting out who don’t have the means to invest in actual furniture.
Decorative Floor Pillows
Floor pillows come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Suede, leather and even faux fur are available. Look for decorative trim such as fringe or tassels for a more traditional look. Satin and beading add elegance. Or for a fun look, go for bright colors, polka-dots and bold stripes. Some bedding sets have matching floor pillows available.
This is a great option if you want to create a plush lounging area in the bedroom. Mix a few matching floor pillows with some solid coordinating colors for a custom look.
There are some great floor pillows for kids and tweens. A collection of giant fruit, a big star & moon, or great big flowers are just some of the cool pillows you can get to really make kids’ bedrooms colorful and fun. For the kids’ play room, try stain resistant vinyl in bright, primary colors. For the TV room, try a large floor pillow with the logo of your favorite sports team or your alma mater; perfect for football Saturdays or March Madness parties.
Japanese Floor Pillows
To create a Japanese-style interior, a clean, uncluttered look is essential. Utilize natural wood finishes and earthy colors. Furniture should be simple in style and low to the floor. Place zabuton (a square Japanese cushion for sitting) and/or tatami (Japanese floor mats) around a short-legged table for a traditional Japanese dinner table.
A zafu is a round cushion, often placed on a zabuton, used for sitting meditation. Both styles of Japanese floor pillows are attractive decorations whether or not they are actually used as traditionally intended.
Some people only change their accessories at Christmas and Easter; but it’s easy to give your rooms a fresh look simply by changing your pillows. Try keeping two sets of floor pillows, and swap them when you get bored with the look. Your old pillows will look new and fresh after not seeing them for a couple of months.
So, when you start thinking of all the great uses for floor pillows and all the cool styles, the question isn’t “Why should I get a floor pillow?” The real question is “How do I choose?”

I have a body pillow but think I need a floor pillow. My kids are always on the floor and a big pillow would make it so comfortable.
