Swimming Pool Slide

I grew up using military pool slides. I was an Air Force brat. While I did not like all the moving around when my dad would be transferred, one of the things that was a huge plus was the way the bases were all set up for families. And one of my favorite things was going to the base swimming pool. There were times when we did have a pool of our own at home, but what would always set the base pools apart were the swimming pool slides. There is nothing like soaring down the wet slide and sailing into the air, only to land with a huge splash!

The best ones had a continuous stream going down them, making them into a pool water slide. There was none of that nonsense of your legs sticking to hot metal with those.

Of course, those were all huge metal contraptions – permanent inground pool slides that were sunk into the concrete surrounding the pool.

Nowadays, things are different, and lots of kids have pool slides of their own. Let’s take a look at what’s available now when we’re looking to buy a swimming pool slide…

Inflatable pool slides

This is really the direction most of this category seems to be headed in. By making the pool slides inflatable, you can create most any shape you like, and with modern molding techniques you can incorporate features that used to be found only on more expensive slides like water sluices, showers, and even tubes to slide through

Above ground pool slides vs. inground pool slides

With that advent of inflatables, there is less a difference between these two than you might think. Unless you really need a large slide, embedded into the pool side concrete, you can use many of today’s models for either pool type.

Again, modern manufacturing has enabled us to have a choice of features and this is one of the most popular. Incorporating water flow down the slide provides lubrication, and keeps the little ones from burning their legs on hot plastic. Many models take a suction directly from the swimming pool, so no separate water source is needed.

How much should you spend on a pool slide?

Costs are way down for this category of pool accessory, to the point where that may not be the primary consideration. More important is the age of your children. This will determine the slide height, and the weight handling requirement for it. With prices for many slides below $100.00, there is no reason not to buy exactly the right one for your children. When they get a little older, it won’t be an issue to simply go out and get another one.

I really loved these things when I was a kid. I hope that this little article helps to guide you in finding the right pool slide for your children.

I have lots of memories from my childhood of using the slide at our neighborhood pool. What a great time! May be this year we will get one installed for our own pool. Something to consider.
