Trinket Boxes

There is one form of collectible item that can be used to hold other collectible items for storage or concealment. I'm speaking of course of the beautiful trinket box. Most trinket boxes are shaped to look like a simple neck neck or other item, and may not even be immediately recognizable as boxes at all.

Each beautiful jeweled trinket box is shaped like something else altogether. Some of them are designed to represent cultural icons that we associate with the various holidays like Christmas or Thanksgiving. Other common things our animals, pets, Disney characters and even famous individuals from history.

These boxes are actually based on historical gift boxes, which were all the rage in the 18th century, and the collectible item for royalty and noblemen. Modern wooden trinket boxes are given as gifts and as stated before, can be used to hide gifts. I suppose you could even give a gift of a silver trinket box hidden inside a larger hinged trinket box!

Most boxes are made of pewter coated with enamel; after the artist completes his or her design the box is baked and polished. Then it is gold or silver-plated, and sometimes gems are even added.

Prices can vary, as they do with any collectible. If you are careful, and make sure that, you buy only quality trinket boxes you may be able to put together a collection from estate and yard sales.

However, if you are not the kind of person that likes to rummage about and piles of leftover junk, and you would really rather not get involved with the eBay scene there are other ways. You can always find a nice trinket box on Amazon or in one of the many online stores dedicated to collectibles.

Building a trinket box collection is a blast, and what many people do is to base a collection on a particular genre. For instance you may be a NASCAR fan -- amazingly enough, there are actually trinket boxes for you to!

Most people however, collect either Disney figures or some kind of animal. Unicorns and butterflies are especially popular. They're also a number of collections that are set up just for children. Girls especially enjoy getting a beautiful handcrafted trinket box in which they can hide their many treasures.

So take a look around -- no doubt you will find some beautiful items, and you may just have a new hobby.
